A Focus on Warehouse Lighting
Why Spend Time on Warehouse Lighting?
Here at EGG Lighting we have been focusing our campaigns recently on warehouse lighting in particular. This is because we believe it is the perfect example of how an environment can achieve the maximum money and energy savings from installing our LEDs. Warehouses are the hubs of hard work, with processing happening 24/7 for most days of the year. They also often have a large footprint, expansive ceilings and open doors. As a result, warehouses consume a lot of energy with equipment, services and staff! All this energy consumption is shown in the bills, the bottom line.
To light the cavernous environment, the most common used fittings are metal halide, high pressure sodium (HPS) technology. This comes in a variety of highbay and lowbay options which determines the function and design of the light. We calculated that using the most common Wattage, at 400W, that it would cost £52,560 per annum to run 100 of these types of lights. That is, having the lights on continuously throughout the year at the standard electricity tariff of 15 pence per kilowatt-hour (KWh). This cost doesn’t include the ongoing maintenance charges of replacing bulbs and repair.
If that seems like a lot of money to you be assured that it is, especially given the low running and maintenance costs of LED replacements. LED light installations are starting to become a popular method for warehouse-owning companies to save money, and to reduce their energy consumption in regulation of the numerous compliance schemes – such as ESOS. However, it isn’t as simple as purchasing anything ‘LED’, quality is a major variable to savings potential.
Even Standard LED Lighting isn’t the Best Value
Another factor of our calculations was that a typical LED highbay replacement would still cost more to run than an EGG Lighting product. With a standard Wattage of 222.2W and the same conditions as above, this would cost £29,200 per annum. An EGG Lighting highbay replacement for a standard HPS bulb runs at 130 Watts. This costs just £17,520 per year to run 100 lights continuously – a saving of around £35k from the original fitting and £12k from the standard low quality LEDs on the market today. Here is a table to make it a little clearer:
You can also see from the table above that the brightness quality of the light (Lm/W) is not lost with the cost improvements. EGG Lighting have the best replacement product for warehouses, matching brightness at a lower cost.
A Warehouse Lighting Case Study
We are proud of our products, services and the money that we save every client. With the Malcolm Group we saved them in excess of £300,000 over 10 years through our expert services and products.
Originating as a family-owned business in the 1920’s, The Malcolm Group has become one of the leading providers of Logistics, Construction and Maintenance services in the UK. Fundamental to the smooth operation of their solutions is the need for hard working, efficient facilities. EGG lighting was honoured to supply, install and manage several projects across their working areas.
We focused particularly on the poor lighting of the racking areas and loading bays to improve the safety and and usage of light. Lights were often left on in unoccupied areas so we provided them with a fully-controllable intelligent sensor system. The project was tailored to their requirements which included glare-reducing, wide-angled lights as well as self-testing emergency lighting. We partnered with market leading developers CP Electronics for the sensor systems. The Malcolm Group was one of our first clients to benefit from our new smart-metering service, ensuring that they are in full control of all the energy they use, including water and heat.
